چکیده

Most multimedia servers reported in the literature are designed to serve multiple and independent video/audio streams. We think that, in the future, multimedia servers will also serve complete presentations. A multimedia presentation contains explicitly specified synchronization information describing when each multimedia data needs to be delivered in the playout of the presentation. Multimedia presentations provide unique opportunities to develop algorithms for buffer management and admission control, as execution-time consumption requirements of presentations are known a priori. In this paper, we examine presentations in three different domains (heavyweight, middleweight, and lightweight presentations) and provide buffer management and admission control algorithms for the three domains. We propose two improvements (flattening and dynamic-adjustments) on the schedules created for the heavyweight presentations. Results from a simulation environment for the proposed algorithms are also presented.

Deterministic Admission Control Strategies in Video Servers with Variable Bit Rate Streams

Video servers are a key component in multimedia systems. Due to the real-time requirements and high resource demand of digital media, a video server must restrict the number of simultaneously serviced media streams. We consider the admission control problem in video servers for the retrieval of media data from secondary storage. Admission control decides whether or not a new request can be acce...

Real-Time Resource Reservation for Synchronized Multimedia Object over Wireless LAN

The increasing use of wireless networks has necessitated the development of a wireless networking infrastructure that supports quality of service (QoS) for multimedia communications. Proxy servers are gaining prominence in facilitating QoS assurance and intelligent resource allocation for multimedia services. In this paper, we propose a proxy-based framework that provides QoS support to mobile ...

Analysis of End - to - End Admission Control

iv 1 Introduction 1 Evolution of standards and protocols for high speed networks coupled with rapid advances in the storage technology has spurred interest in distributed multimedia applications. Distributed video-on-demand systems are expected to be one of the most important services supported by the next generation of high-speed networks and video servers. Because of the stringent real-time p...

An Architecture for Interactive Distributed Multimedia Information Services

In this work, we present an architecture for interactive distributed multimedia information services. The service consists of three basic parts, the clients, the access servers, and the content servers. Clients manage the presentation of the requested multimedia documents, while also ensure the synchronization among various involved media. Special policies for the synchronized presentation of m...

A novel data caching scheme for multimedia servers

In this paper, we propose a Bi-directional Fragmental Pipelining (BFP) technique and its variable buffer size data-caching scheme BFPV to reduce the disk I/O bandwidth requirement for multimedia servers. Our mathematical analysis shows that the BFP technique is superior to the traditional unidirectional pipelining technique in terms of memory buffer space requirement. We further demonstrate tha...
